Today, Amorgos is visited by a large number of tourists which come to the island to enjoy the unspoiled natural environment, the crystal waters of the sea, the rough beauty of the landscape and the off the beaten track way of life.
The history of Rethimnon is lost in the depths of time. It seems that the area was first inhabited during the prehistoric period (1350-1250 BC.), the name of the town was then, Rithimna. The gold and silver coins found from the fourth and third century BC. point to a golden age of this ancient city during this period.
The beautiful "island of roses" has a rich and varied history. On a hill above the charming town of Lindos rises an ancient acropolis dedicated to goddes Athina. Below lies the bay of St Paul, where the apostle landed during his voyages. The crusading Knights of St John left the medieval city of Rhodos behind when they were defeated by Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. The Turks then occupied Rhodos for almost four hundred years leaving mosques, minarets and a turkish bath to mark their presence.
Renowned for its spectacular sunsets, Santorini is dominated by a volcanic crater. Visit the well-preserved Minoan village of Akrotiri, believed to be part of Atlantis, the legendary lost city, or travel to the charming village of nearby Oia.
A natural harbour filled with yachts greets you at Marmaris. In this Turkish jewel you will find plenty of places to shop and sample the local cuisine. Or travel to tranquil Dalyan to see the ancient site of Katmos and the Lycian tombs carved from the rocks.
Iraklion, the capital town of Crete and its principal commercial port is just three miles away from the fantastic ruins of the Palace of Knossos. Discovered in 1899 by Sir Arthur Evans and partialy reconstructed, the elaborate palace is believed to be the mythical Labyrinth of King Minos and the seat of ancient Minoan Culture. The Archaeological Museum of Iraklion displays many of the treasures found during the excavations.

| MINOS THRONE |
 Iraklion
|
| A frequent expression encountered by the reader of Minoan Crete is that of the Minoan Palace. The term was first used by the British Archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans who excavated the site of Knossos in the beginning of the century, and is maintained ever since. The truth is that we know nothing about the form of government of Minoan Crete. There may have been a priest-king or priestess-queen or a board of priests. In the absence of written records, it is impossible to tell anything with certainty. Yet we are not helpless because archaeology can tell us something about the elusive Minoan society.
