On 20 September the ship was named Queen Elizabeth 2. At this early stage four maiden voyages were scheduled. On 19 November the ship moved to drydock in Greenock before beginning trials. The first summer of service was highly profitable. The first dramatic incident of the ship's career occurred in January 1971.
Queen Elizabeth 2 sailed out of Southampton December 12 after her biennial overhaul and refit at the A&P dry-dock. Over the past three weeks, one thousand people worked to complete the refit work to specification and on schedule.
This time, significant upgradings in passenger areas include the Princess Grill and the largest of the five restaurants, the Mauretania, which now goes to single-seating dining, in line with all the other restaurants onboard. Single-seating dining is an important feature of five-star cruising.
This improvement, done in response to passenger demand, is achieved by removing a number of cabins from use, reducing the ship's capacity from 1750 to 1500.
