Golden Gulf of Mexico I
Ten day cruise aboard the SEABOURN SUN starting on November 11, 2001 from Fort Lauderdale in Florida.
Cruise the Gulf of Mexico, Veracruz in Mexico, Galveston in Texas, New Orleans in Louisiana, Key West in Florida, returning in Fort Lauderdale.
Balustrade houses, flower-filled courtyards and wrought-iron balconies lend a unique charm to New Orleans' streetscapes. Stroll from Rue Bourbon to Jackson Square, the historic heart of the festive French Quarter.
Quaint and quirky, Key West offers a laid-back charm and artistic sensibility See Truman's Little White House, the Hemingway House and Audubon House. And snorkel at the last living coral reef in the continental United States.
Smaller and less busy than nearby Miami, Fort Lauderdale offers easy access to hotels, motorways and airports, which helps make getting to the ship more convenient.
In 1836, Michael Menard, bought"one league and a labour of land" from the Republic of Texas and on this island created the "Queen City of the Gulf". Today, the city and island of Galveston combine fascinating architecture- such as Ashton Villa and the ornate Bishop's Palace- with history and culture. The Grand 1894 Opera House is the official opera house of Texas, offering a wide variety of entertainment.
Veracruz, capital of the state of Veracruz, was christened by the Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortes as he first stepped foot on Mexican soil. Soon thereafter, Veracruz began its colorful history as one of the New World's premier ports. As a deterrent to marauding pirates, the city built nine forts (mostly gone) plus the massive Castillo San Juan de Ulua. Over the years, the guns of those same forts were unfortunately turned on the city by foreign opponents. Veracruz has witnessed invading armies from Spain, England, France and the United States, whose forces fired upon the city as recently as 1914.
