Russell Square is one of the prettiest Georgian squares in the neighbourhood of Bloomsbury, with a ground level fountain and a great cafe to sit and enjoy Indian summer evenings and letting the world go by.
Russell Square has many attractions for the visitor within just a 10 minute walk from it, galleries such as,
Brunei Gallery at
SOAS,
Art Workers Guild and the
Political Cartoon Gallery. One of the world's greatest museums
The British Museum is very close by as is
The Charles Dickens Museum, the museum of
Egyptian Archaeology called the
Petrie Museum and
The Foundling Museum which tells the story of the hospital for abandoned babies.
The British Library home to the
UK's national library and to unique exhibition galleries, it is an amazing building and worth a visit just for itself let alone what it has exhibited inside it. If you are a visitor with children to
Russell Square a wonderful place to take your children would be the
Pollock's Toy Museum, it includes toys of all kinds including dolls, dolls' houses, Victorian nursery, toy theatres, teddy bears, tin toys and folk toys from around the world.
Another significant sight in the vicinity is the architecturally magnificent building of
St Pancreas which has been turned into deluxe super suites upstairs and below is the new home of the
Eurostar;
St Pancras International offers a range of shops, bars and restaurants, unlike anything ever seen in a
UK station.
There is a world-class brasserie, as well as being one Europe's longest champagne bar over 200 feet long, and a daily farmers' market. Also housed within the station is a mixture of boutiques bringing you the very best of everything from
Paris,
Brussels and obviously
London. This spectacular station used to be
London's Grand Hotel until it stopped trading and it became a derelict building. The whole building now is incredibly impressive.
Russell Square has within its immediate locality hotels to suit all visitors from those who seek the intimate and small the
Bedford Hotel may fit the bill, for those thinking of romance they should try the "Montague On The Gardens", and for the more traditional try the
Berners Hotel.
Russell Square is close to most of the large shopping areas for fashion etc, but there seems to be a profusion of bookshops that sell both rare and second hand as well as new book in or near
Russell Square.
The explorer in you might be interested in some locations near
Russell Square, such as to the north is
Highgate Cemetery, in
Islington, crammed full of gravestones, tombs, catacombs, monuments and mounds dating from
Victorian times to the present day or
Arsenal Football Club at their new stadium the
"Emirates" which is near to
Holloway Road Station (Piccadilly line). If you feel even more adventurous why not venture even further afield, take the
National Rail from
Kings Cross Station to
Borehamwood to visit
Elstree Studios.
Place's nearer to
Russell Square which may be of interest are
Camden Town, and
Kings Cross Station, the
British Museum and the new
St Pancreas Station,
Euston Station and the great choice of restaurants.
