The central "finger" of the southern Peloponnese is
dominated by the massive bulk of Mt. Taygetus, which rises to over
2,400m before dropping into a series of rocky hills and finally
plunging into the ocean. We explore the mountain's lower reaches,
packed with historical remains from all ages - Mycenean tombs,
Frankish forts, Venetian towers and Byzantine churches - visiting
either in spring, when wild flowers carpet the fields and snowy
peaks glisten behind, or in autumn, when the warm sea beckons
and the air is crisp and clear.
Our 7-day tour offers a series of varied but undemanding day - hikes from
two carefully chosen village centres on either side of the
mountain. From Kardamili, a pretty fishing village set in tranquil
olive groves on the west coast, we explore the "Outer Mani" area
with its semi-ruined castles and picturesque seascapes. We then
move to Anavriti, a remote mountain community tucked in the folds
of Taygetus' eastern flanks, and investigate the neighbouring hills
and gorges. The week is rounded off with a visit to Mystras, a well-
preserved Byzantine city, perched on a conical hill above the plain
of Sparta, with frescoed churches galore.
This is a relatively easy walk - ideal for those trying their first
walking holiday - as well as a fascinating insight into a historical
and culture-packed region. We walk from 4-5 hours per day,
mostly on dirt roads and stone mulepaths. You can also take a day
out from the hiking programme at any stage to relax or do your own
exploration.
All nights are spent in comfortable hotels (double or triple
rooms with private bathroom). We take dinner at a local taverna in
Kardamili and at the hotel in Anavriti. Lunches are light taverna
meals (4 days) and picnics (2 days).
