The enchanting and unique scenery has made this province in Northern Germany one of the top-ranking vacation destinations. To the north Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is bordered by the Baltic Sea. On its western boundary sits Schleswig-holstein, Poland is the border on the eastside, and Brandenburg and Niedersachsen are its neighbours to the south. Mecklenburg is the western part, and Vorpommern the eastern part of the province. The land was formed during the ice age and is part of the Northern German Lowland Plain. The Baltic Coastline is characterised by spits and bays. The mainland has flat woodland hills up to 180 metres, and a wide ranging lake district. Some of the important rivers are the Elbe, the Elde, the Warnow, the Peene, the Recknitz and the Trebel. The land is dominated by over 1500 kilometres of Baltic Coastline with free access to fantastic beaches, islands and peninsulas, and steep buffs such as the well known Kreidefelsen (chalk cliffs) on Ruegen Island, the largest island in Germany. The inland Lake District covers more than 2000 lakes, one of them the Meritz is the largest in Germany and a true paradise, not just for water sports. The cities of the region have old traditions and long histories. They started to be founded in the 12th century and were built along the trade routes. The province offers 3 National Parks and 261 nature reserves. The National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft includes the entire area of the peninsula Fischland-Darss-Zingst and Hiddensee Island and is the largest resting place for cranes in Northern Europe Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a unique creation of nature. Not only the unspoiled nature, but also a history of over 1000 years, the traditional Hanse cities, the prestigious architecture in Brick-Gothic style, castles and mansions from different eras, wind mills, farm houses with thatched roofs and enchanting avenues are characterizing of this province.
