Tozeur prospered then as a trading post on the route of the great trans-Saharan caravans but today Tozeur is the center of Tunisian desert tourism industry. From a simple overnight stop on desert safaris from the coastal resorts of Djerba, Sousse, Monastir and Hammamet, it is now an established resort. Always the commercial and political centre of the Jerid, Tozeur, for many years had greater regional power than the central government thanks to the date harvest, which made the town an important market and attracted caravans and merchants. Today, the palmery of Tozeur is its main attraction, a forest of about 10 square kilometers with 200 000 trees and perhaps about 200 water springs. Belvedere, a 20-minute walk from the Dar Cherait, offers panoramic views over the palm grove, the Chot el Jerid and the Chot el Gharsa. For best views go early in the morning or at sunset. Dar Cherait Museum depicts scenes from Tunisian life past and present showing typical examples of a bey's bedroom, a wedding scene, a hammam and a Bedouin tent. Costumes, jewellery, ceramics and sacred books are on display. The work of weavers, cobblers and tailors is also highlighted.
