Bad Wiessee was awarded the title of spa resort in 1922 due to its therapeutic springs, which have been proven to contain iodine, sulphur and fluoride-rich sodium chloride at concentration levels rarely seen in Europe and
unique within Germany.
With their beneficial properties, the strongest iodine-sulphur springs are a balm for the body and soul and can be used to treat the following conditions: cardiovascular disease, muscular-skeletal illnesses, rheumatic diseases, respiratory tract diseases, eye complaints, general weakness and convalescence.
Lake Tegernsee lies in a broad, sunny valley right on the edge of the Alps just 50 or so kilometres south of
Munich. The lakeside promenade and the spa gardens are a hive of activity all year round.
Tegernsee Abbey is a site of great historical significance. Water enthusiasts can enjoy a whole range of water sports in and on
Lake Tegernsee.
Those who prefer to keep to dry land can explore
Bad Wiessee and the surrounding area on foot or by bike, or take a leisurely stroll around the lake. The
car-free lakeside promenade, which runs for around five kilometres, is a fascinating nature trail and one of the region's most popular walks. Starting on the northern edge of town, it runs around the lake past the yacht club and casino to
Wiessee Bay. The promenade is also used as a venue for major lakeside festivals such as the
Tegernsee Valley Montgolfiade.
Set right in the middle of the lakeside promenade, the
sensory garden has plenty of things to smell, touch and admire. Other attractions include the
'fountain of sound' with its water plants, which is particularly helpful for blind people who can use the sound of the water to get their bearings. All of the plants have name labels that are also
in Braille. At the centre of the gardens is a beautiful pavilion.
The village square is lined with pretty historical farmhouses. The
Moenchsboot (monk's boat) sculpture in the heart of
Bad Wiessee is a more recent addition. You'll find a selection of lively and interesting events, both large and small, in the spa resort of
Bad Wiessee and the
Tegernsee Valley. Join in the celebrations on
JohanniTag (midsummer's day) when, following old customs, bonfires are lit on the mountain tops.
"Dance in the May" - maypoles are set up in all the towns and villages around
Lake Tegernsee.
