The seaside village of Agia Galini with 1000 inhabitants is located on the south coast of Crete and was once the harbour of ancient Sivritos.
It is a new village, founded in 1884 by villagers from Melambes. The name is very old, as it is the name of the river Platis or Amarianos and ancient maps mention the same river under the name of Elektra.
During ancient years there was a settlement under the name "Soulia" or "Soulina" at the same place, which was the port of ancient Syvritos. Artemis was the goddess adored here and the church of Galini Christos, visited by
Buondelmonti in 1415, was built on the ruins of her temple. Therefore the present day Agia Galini owes its name to the monastery of Galini Christos.
The distance from Rethymnon is 61 km and 68 km from Iraklion. The village has a small port, beaches to the right and left and a Byzantine church.
