Ioaninna is a mountainous region on the north west tip of the country and a part of the Pindos mountain range is located here. Small fertile plains can be found hidden amongst the hulking mountains, as well as narrow valleys and sheer gorges, including the Aoos gorge and the renowned Vikos ravine.Ancient Ellonia, the basin of Ioannina, and Lake Pamvotida are located in the centre of the county.
