This county was annexed by Greece in 1881 as part of the Treaty of Berlin. It has borders with the county of Ioannina to the north, Trikala and Karditsa to the east, Prevesa to the west and Aitoloakarvania to the south.

This is a region of great historical interest, noteworthy mountain villages and villages on the plain and coastline of the Amvrakiko Gulf, where the rivers Lauros and Arahthos enter the sea.
The marshland of the area has been decreed a National Park and is protected under the Treaty of Ramsar.
