Lefkada town, with its tile-roofed, wooden-framed buildings and the green landscape all around it, has its own personality.
A short distance from the town is the fortress of Ayia Mavra next to a salt lake; it has remained a vigilant guard and protector since the 14th century and has a great deal to tell us of battles with fierce pirates, a mighty resistance to the Turks, but also its fight against time and earthquakes. On it was raised the flag of the independent Septinsular Republic in 1810.
Each summer it hosts the Festivals of Literature and Art and relieves its golden age.
The harbor is the focal point for all the services the visitor might need, from hotels to caiques for excursions to the surrounding islands.
The character of the town, living and modern with warm and vital elements from the past, is best found along the main street, Dorpfeld street which leads to the main square. There in one of the cafes, you can enjoy a soft drink or the special local almond emulsion "soumada".
A meeting place during the day the square is jammed with people every evening. The church of Agios Spyridonas is on its northwest side and is worth a visit.
