Pieria county has experienced a boom in tourism in recent years. The main attractions of Pieria are the spectacular beaches along the coastline and the home of the gods at the peak of Mount Olympus.

The majority of the county is flat and covered in maple, elm, fir, pine and beech trees.

Archaeological excavations have shown that Mt. Olympus has been inhabited from the Bronze Age. Dion, the Macedonian temple of Zeus, is located at the foot of Olympus.

Pieria was under Turkish occupation from 1389 until 1912. During that time Mt. Olympus was used as a den of thieves. The 'home of the gods' remained literally unpassable until 2nd August 1913 when it was climbed by two Swiss travellers. In 1938 a part of the mountain was decreed a National Park with the intention of protecting the natural environment there from every kind of degredation. Since 1981 the area has become a part of a UNESCO scheme for the preservation of wildlife.

The county of Pieria offers the visitor the opportunity to combine beaches and mountains and tourist facilities which are second to none.
