What strikes one most about this prefecture is the contrast between mountain, river and plain. The longest rivers are the Ahelos and the Pineios. A dam has been built, called the Itamos, which in turn formed the lake Tauropos that supplies the hydroelectric powerstation of the same name as well as the plain of Karditsa. There are also mineral water springs here, the best known of which are the spas of Smokovou, located roughly 35 km from the capital of the county.
Tourism is somewhat limited in this area due to the heavy mainland climate that exists here. However, nature lovers flock to the area to explore the forests and mountains.
Apart from the undisputed natural beauty of the area, visitors can also lose themselves while exploring the numerous monasteries and travel back in time by way of the archaeological sites that testify to man's presence here as far back as the Neolithic era.
