Acton

Acton the birth place of the Who, and much more! The community in Acton is multi-cultural and this is reflected in the types of restaurants that are found there. Acton is very well catered by London transport with stations totted everywhere.

North Acton & East Acton (central line), Acton Main Line (National Rail) and other stations accommodate the visitor to other parts of London and the UK. Near North Acton station is a really good Chinese restaurant situated on the ground floor of the Ramada Encore London West.

Acton is also situated on the A40, which gives easy access to Oxford Street on the east for great shopping, and Oxford the city on the west for architecture, and for its famous Universities.

Acton is an area in West London, and its part of a much bigger borough that of the Borough of Ealing. Acton means "oak farm" or "farm by oak trees", and is derived from the Anglo-Saxon ac (oak) and tun (farm), and its an ancient village mentioned in the Doomsday Book, a health spa because of fresh springs in the 17th century, and a major area for laundries due to the soft water in the 19th century.

Acton was the birthplace of The Who, of which all members except Keith Moon went to Acton High School. Pete Townshend's 1982 solo album, "All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes", contained the track "Stardom in Acton" in reference to his home town, while the accompanying video was filmed on and around Acton High Street.

Part of The Monty Python series was shot in Acton, as well as other well known programs such as fictional home of Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses. Scenes from the 1986 movie Aliens and the 1989 movie Batman were shot inside the disused Acton power station.

The musician M.I.A. in some interviews has hinted that one of the meanings of her stage name is "Missing in Acton", with Acton being the place where she grew up.

Locations very near Acton that offer shopping and entertainment are Shepherds Bush and Hammersmith, but the pleasure of Central London is only 20 minutes by London Underground.
