Mochlos today is just a small island close to the shore, but in Minoan times it was a peninsula and had two harbors on the north coast of Crete in the Gulf of Mirabello.

Mochlos was inhabited in the Neolithic period and throughout the Minoan periods, and again in Greco-Roman and Byzantine times. The Mohlos tombs produced the largest and richest collection of gold jewelry of the period. Among other finds of interest were a gold signet ring, seal stones and stone vases.The Minoan settlement was on the southern part of the island with cemeteries of rock tombs and burials in sarcophagi and funerary urns of the Protopalatial and Neopalatial periods. The Greco-Roman and Byzantine settlement was on the north. Most of these important items found in the area are exhibited in various displays at the Iraklion Archaeological MuseumMohlos is a good place for spending lazy times by the water. Several taverns are available for good food and fresh fish.Although the narrow canal between main land and the island of Mochlos is swimmable you may wish to cross dry. In this case Mochlos Boat Tours will take you across for a fee on a licensed boat and will return after hours to take you back if you care to ring the bell of Agios Nikolaos. Yiannis can be found at the taverna "Kohilia" of Giorgos and Despoina Fragiadakis right in front of the "harbour".
If you have the time to spend make your way towards the church of Agio Pnevma at the hill top south east of Mochlos. There is a dirt track starting from the main road at a distance of about 2 km. from Mochlos. If you make it to the top after about 10 minutes drive in this narrow unpaved track - walk if you prefer - you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the Mirabello Gulf. This tiny white washed church made it to the front cover of the well known GEO magazine some years ago.
