Vryses on the main road Hania to Rethymnon has retained much of its shady charm, interspersed with busts of heroic, grandly moustachioed Cretans. Locals come here to picnic and swim in its creek. Crete's only lake, Lake Kournas, is near Vryses.
The village of Vryses is famous throughout Crete for its thick, creamy yoghurt. Served in the cafes beneath the plane trees as you come into the village, it's best eaten with a large spoonful of honey on top.
The village of Vryses is 16 km from Hania. There are extensive ruins of one of the most important archaeological sites in the Hania area.
Some archaeologists (Pococke and Spratt) believe Vryses to be ancient Kydonia while others identify it as the ancient city of Pergamum.
The place was first inhabited in the Neolithic period. Interesting Neolithic finds, chiefly pottery, have come from the cave of Kera Spiliotissa, near Vryses.

Antonis Zois excavated a large Neopalatial building with many rooms here. A Postpalatial tomb produced excellent bronze finds.
A Hellenistic sanctuary was also excavated at the site of Kastelos above the village.
