Ancient Doulopolis was located at the village of Douliana, which is in the commune of Vamos. Vamos occupies a central position and has existed since the Venetian period.
The Turks called it Serai-likioi, from the imposing administration building, which they called Serayio. It was always a gathering place for the nearby villages and the scene of many battles during the Cretan uprisings of the 19th century.
A leading figure was Manousos Koundouros, who organised a movement for the independence of Crete and defeated the Turks in 1896.
Vamos was the birthplace of the eminent journalist and publisher Dimitrios Lambrakis.
Today, many houses are restored and converted to holiday accommodations.
