Carasco
"Car-asco" is an old Ligurian word meaning "river head": and, in fact, the town stands at the point where the Rivers Lavagna and Sturla meet.
The old bridge that used to connect the district of Chiavari with the Fontanabuona and Sturla valleys was essential for commerce with Lombardy. It was what attracted the original inhabitants to settle there, and the area was already well populated in Roman times. Destroyed by flooding on numerous occasions, the bridge was totally rebuilt out of stone in the seventeenth century. Today, it connects Carasco with Leivi and is flanked by another bridge built out of reinforced concrete.The fifth-century castle on the high ground at Paggi (only a few parts of the foundations now remain) formed part of the defense system of the Garibaldo territory and dominated the meeting-point of the three valleys.Carasco was situated in a strategic position for control of the hinterland: the Genoese were aware of this and, in the twelfth century, erected the Rivarola bastion in the heart of the Fieschi estate in order to defend against incursions by the feudal lords of Lavagna. Standing in a central position in the loop formed by the river, the castle eventually ceased to be manned and fell to ruin: some of the outer wall can still be seen.The monks of San Colombiano built a church and a monastery in Carasco (San Marziano) and Graveglia (Sant'Eufemio, where the ashes of the saint are kept). A few traces of the San Marziano building are still visible in a farmhouse, which later took its place.Carasco is today a center of handicraft and industrial activity, particularly in the flower-growing and slate production sectors. The interesting excursion to Monte Carnella (713 m.) offers you some fine panoramic views. There are some good sports facilities, including a swimming pool, two horse-riding centers and a mini golf course.
