The museum landscape continues in the northern part of Bonn, where several institutions have joined to form the
Kunst and Szene Altstadt. A history of more than 2000 years has given the city most varied facets.
The heritage of
Ludwig van Beethoven, born here in 1770, has its obligations. Therefore, the
Beethoven Orchestra is one of the most important ambassadors of
Bonn's culture, meanwhile successfully promoting the cityâs musical image abroad. The orchestra with its 106 members counts among the best in Germany. It contributes in an important way to the artistic success of the
Beethoven Festivals, which have taken place since 1927.
The homes of famous
Bonn citizens are also open to tourists: the
August-Macke-Haus, the
Schumannhaus, the home of
Ernst Moritz Arndt and naturally the birthplace of Bonn's most famous citizen, the composer
Ludwig van Beethoven.
The theatre tradition of this city goes back to the times of the Prince Electors. In 1826, the art-loving citizens built their first theatre. Private theatre is also of a respectable quality.
The Bonn Theatre has made a name for itself, especially in past years, with the
European Theatre Biennial which will continue with a new concept from 2004 on as the
Bonn Biennial.
The open-air festival
Bonner Sommer (Bonn Summer) has taken place regularly since 1971 and has been the trendsetter for many open air festivals in Germany. More than 100 events focus mainly on the
âDialogue between Culturesâ. From May to late October, this festival emphasises
Bonnâs international character and contributes to a north-south network of artists from all over the world.
