The beach of Almyros, next to the aquatic niche of Almyros. One of the few on Crete, this niche is
of great importance and beauty. Near the town of Agios Nikolaos next to the road leading
to Sitia and Ierapetra, with an estimated size of 150 000 sq meters. A stream with a depth
varying between 1 to 5 meters formed by interspersed springs flows through the niche.
Eucalyptus growing along the road offer a cooling shadow.
Rich in flora and fauna, with marshes, reed beds and morasses. Its stagnant and running
sweet waters combine with the sea waters thus becoming brackish.
It is a place of high fish production and a stop for the birds of passage which not
only rest and find food here but also nest and reproduce themselves before continuing
their voyage.
In the last years some 80 species of birds have been observed. Some are migrant and some live
here permanently.
Herons, hoopoes, wild ducks, wild geese, black ducks and a multitude of other birds as well
as a striped grey mullet, the eel and the tortoise are characteristic for the fauna while
the rush, the lentisk, the eucalyptus and the reeds characterize the flora. During winter
the tortoises hide themselves in the bulrush of this aquatic niche and in the summer they come
out and lay their eggs in the sand near the reeds. On the beach one can find lots of shells
belonging to two major categories.
