Getting to Crete
Crete has a well-developed road network, especially on the northern side.

Regular flights connect the island to Athens (from airports in Hania, Iraklion and Sitia) while in the summer it also has connections to Paros, Mykonos, Santorini and Rhodos.

There are direct flights btween Iraklion and Thessaloniki.

The domestic air routes are exploited by Olympic Airways, the national carrier of Greece and AIR GREECE a privately owned airline from Crete.

There are scheduled flights connecting Iraklion with European Cities and many charter flights providing for the tourism trade of the summer months.

The most important harbours on the island are also on its north side (Souda, Hania, Kisamos, Iraklion, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia).

The commercial and maritime traffic on the island is conducted through the harbours of Hania and Iraklion with daily scheduled departures connecting daily with Piraeus.

Minoan Lines from Iraklion and ANEK Lines from Hania operate the routes with good standard of Roll on Roll off Ferry Boats, departing every evening between 19:00 and 19:30 arriving next morning at 06:30 in Piraeus.

Each ship offers very good standards of accommodation in "Luxury", "First" and "Second" class cabins most with private toilet / shower.

On every ship there is a "deck" class offering aircraft type seats.

There are also daily Ferry Boat departures from Rethymnon with equal standards of accommodation, and three times a week from Agios Nikolaos.
LANE, the Lassithi shipping line, with its "Vitsentzos Kornaros" ferry, exploits the route between Piraeus and Agios Nikolaos stopping in Milos on the way, then carries on to Sitia Kassos and Karpathos.

Minoan Lines also joins Crete from the port of Iraklion with regular departures to Thessaloniki connecting in between with Santorini, and the port of the north Aegean islands.

Connections to South Peloponnese from the port of Kastelli in West Crete are seasonal. One shipping line offers connection between this port and the island of Kythira and Gytheion.

The harbours on the Libyan Sea (south side) have little activity with the exception of Kaloi Limenes and Ierapetra. Small motor-boats connect the south coast of Crete with Gavdos, the only inhabited islet of all those that surround Crete.
